Ink on paper, two album leaves mounted together as a hanging scroll, the upper leaf with a long calligraphic inscription dated dingsi (1737), followed by two seals of the artist reading Pengchong zhi yin and Tianfei, the lower leaf inscribed Nanhua Sanxian Zhang Pengchong Xie with one rectangular relief seal of the artist reading Pengchong and one rectangular seal reading Nanhua; together with a couplet of calligraphy by the same artist, ink on painted paper, mounted for frame, inscribed and dated gengzi (1720), Nanhua San Ren Pengchong, followed by two seals of the artist reading Zhang Pengchong Yin and Nanhua, with one collector's seal.

  • Zhang Pengchong received the jinshi degree in 1727, joining the Hanlin Academy during the early Qianlong period. His painting and calligraphy were influenced by Su Shi (1037-1101). Six of his works were included in the Shiqu Baoji, the Qianlong emperor's publication of the imperial painting collection. For another example of his painting see Heritage of the Brush, the Roy and Marylin Papp Collection of Chinese Painting, Phoenix Art Museum, 1989. pp. 82-83.
