In the 1950s, the fascination with undersea exploration and the development of SCUBA diving as a leisure pursuit led to a cult following of the Rolex Submariner. Launched at the 1954 Basel Spring Fair, the first Submariner model was waterproof to 300 feet, adequate to meet needs at that point in time. However, the explosion in demand for oil and gas in the mid-1950s led to a rise in deep sea drilling explorations. Unfortunately, the Submariner's construction did not allow it go to the depths that were required and in 1971, the Sea Dweller was launched. Improvements made such as a strengthened case and gas escape valve allowed this revamped model to withstand the high pressure of deep sea level diving and repeated compression/decompression cycles. Their ability to withstand arduous conditions and the reputation for precision has made this a timepiece appreciated not just by professional divers, but also by Rolex connoisseurs. Subtle differences in appearances between the Submariner and the Sea Dweller include a specially designed bracelet that has extension links so that the watch may be worn over a light diving suit.
