The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak series is regarded by many as the quintessential sports watch. The iconic design revered by horological connoisseurs is instantly recognizable with its structured strongbox case with structurally integral octagonal bezel secured by eight hexagonal screws. Another signature design element is the engine turned dial with Grande Tapisserie motif. Launched in 1972 and designed by Gerald Genta, the design of the Royal Oak remains timeless until today. It is said that the bezel was inspired by the octagonal port holes of the HMS Royal Oak, the British Royal Navy ship on which Charles II took refuge during the English Civil War.
