    在中國近現代畫史上,黃賓虹無疑是執山水畫之牛耳者,包前孕後,堪稱為開啟一代新風的繪畫大師。他一生研究傳統,深悟個中堂奧,其作畫都是筆筆寫出,不用大墨團塗抹,全部用線條寫出。起筆、運筆、收筆,法度頗嚴,功力深厚。陳傳席評黃賓虹曰:「他(黃賓虹)的筆墨內涵之高度,無人超越。有人倡導『形式美』,而黃賓虹的畫主要是『內在美』。『形式美』猶如一個人的服飾美,未必有內在的東西。『內在美』所顯露出的氣質、風度之美才是真正的美。」(參見陳傳席《畫壇點將錄》,三聯書店,香港,2006年,頁 79。)

    黃賓虹1934年嘗著《畫法要旨》,總結出「平、圓、留、重、變」五種筆法,又將墨法歸結為「濃、淡、破、積、潑、焦、宿」七種,道出了中國畫用筆用墨之真諦。此幅黃賓虹〈古法山水〉,以其獨特的「兼皴帶染法」為之,處處見筆,筆筆有來歷,如錐畫沙,如屋漏痕,焦墨、積墨、破墨等諸法齊下,渾厚華滋,黑、密、厚、重,而亂中有序,蘊藉無窮。款識中品評古人所用筆墨之法,字字珠璣,與其畫作相得益彰。
