A set of eighteen carved ivory luohans
Late Qing dynasty
Each disciple of Buddha carved standing with their faces finely detailed with individual expressions, dressed in crisply draped monk's robes embellished with various auspicious objects, each distinctively modelled in a different posture, patting a tiger, both hands in prayer, fidgeting with a clambering lion dog on the shoulder, holding a gnarled staff, bundles of potted bamboo, a fan, sacre musical instruments and bells of various kinds, one posing with his stomach open to reveal a smaller seated Buddha, some with a deity and dragon emerging from an open urn in his grip, wood stand and box.
