A pair of cinnabar lacquer peach-shaped boxes and covers
Qianlong
Each with the exterior exquisitely carved with composite peony and leafy sprays, one with a scene of Zhang Guolao on his white mule facing backwards with a yuku in his hand, accompanied by his attendant serving tea within a peach-shaped roundel, all above a diaper ground of stylised breaking waves, the other with a scene of Zhong Liquan holding a fan with his left hand, dressed in a flowing robe exposing a bare torso, depicted gazing towards his attendant carrying multiple scrolls on his back, all with the interior and base lacquered black.
Each: 14.8cm wide. (4).

Footnotes

  • The current pair is likely to have originated from a set of eight boxes, each decorated with one of the Eight Daoist Immortals. According to the Daoist tradition, Zhang Guolao is a symbolic representation of old age, simultaneously carrying the wishes for immortality and a peaceful death. In contrast, Zhong Liquan possesses a fan which has the magical ability of reviving the dead. The nature of the connotative messages of these designs made them the ideal gifts for birthday celebrations. A very similar carved black lacquer 'Zhang Guo Lao crossing the river' peach-form box in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Lacquer Wares of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 2006, p. 98, no. 67.
