Ming dynasty Of circular form, intricately carved on both the cover and base with a magpie perching upon leafy branches bearing blossoming prunus and pods, all against a diaper ground of a double-diamond enclosing a formalized floret, the carving is deep, well rounded and bold, the interior lacquered black. 7.1cm diam.
A closely related carved 'bird and flower' cinnabar lacquer box and cover example from the National Palace Museum, Taipei collection, with similar composition, dated Ming dynasty (16th Century), is illustrated in Chen Huixia, Carving the Subtle Radiance of Colors: Treasured Lacquerware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2008, p.64, no.042.
