The Property of Mr and Mrs Arthur Harris (lots 571-583)
A large Yixing 'Ming style' teapot and cover
Early Qing dynasty, signed Shao Zhongru The main globular body rising to steep shoulders below the straight rim, set with a prominent 'C'-shaped handle opposite an elegant straight spout, the domed cover surmounted by a globular knop, the exterior plain and undecorated, the underside impressed with a four-character zhuanshu square seal mark. 21.8cm wide. (2).
Shao Zhongru is an unknown potter who appears to be unrecorded in any historical context. However, it is worth noting that the slightly tapered form with a short and straight neck presented by current example is also found on teapots made during the early seventeenth century, for example, a large teapot with cloud collar motif by Chen Yongqing from the K. S. Lo Collection, illustrated in Hong Kong Museum of Art (ed.), Yixing Purple Clay Wares The K.S.Lo Collection, Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware, Hong Kong, 2002, p.64, no. 13.
