An Yixing stoneware 'ox' waterpot and cover
Qing dynasty, signed Chen Zhongmei Exquisitely potted in the form of an ox, the creature with bulbous body supported on four study feet, one side protruding the head with a band tied to the neck, the top surmounted by an oval-shaped cover with a semi-circular knop, the underside of the stomach with a two-character kaishu signature of the artist. 12.3cm wide. The 'ox' waterpot is also called xizun, of which the prototype is a bronze ritual vessel of the Warring States period. Compare another waterpot with similar form but with different artist's signature, reputedly from the collection of Chen Keli, sold in these rooms, 27 May 2012, lot 552.
