Mid Qing dynasty
The large Buddhist figure finely potted in kneeling with the left leg bent backwards on a downward double lotus pedestal, the smiling face of benevolence flanked by a pair of lobed ears and framed by an elaborate spiked crown binding the hair either in high chignon or draping over the shoulders, wearing loose robes and overflowing scarfs around the neck leaving the chest bare, decorated all round with beaded necklace, earrings, bracelets and ornaments, the arms converging with the right palm holding a flaming pearl, all elaborately gilded in gold and a thick creamy robin's egg glaze.
40.5cm high.

Footnotes

  • Large porcelain figures of bodhisattvas are rare, and the posture of this figure is particularly striking. For a similar example from the Malcolm MacDonald collection, now in the Oriental Museum, University of Durham, United Kingdom, see Ireneus Legeza, A Descriptive and Illustrated Catalogue of the Malcolm MacDonald Collection of Chinese Ceramics, London, 1972, p.122, no.72. Another enamelled porcelain figure of a bodhisattva in this posture is illustrated by Lou Pin-heng, Precious Treasures of My Humble House, Taipei, 1988, pg. 54, no. 12. For an example sold at auction, see a smaller figure sold in these rooms, 29 May 2008, lot 578.

This series of figures may be based on an original prototype in bronze, a Xuande mark and period gilt-bronze bodhisattva in the Rietberg Museum, illustrated by Helmut Uhlig in On the Path to Enlightenment: The Berti Aschmann Foundation of Tibetan Art at the Museum of Rietberg Zurich, Zurich, 1995, pl.72, p.123 (fig.1), where the author suggests that the figure may represent a member of the Imperial family.
