A massive famille-rose baluster vase
Superbly enamelled in vivid shades of pink, brown, blue, turquoise, yellow, lime, and spinach green, the waisted neck decorated with the fengdeng, the lanterns of abundance suspending bejeweled floral heads, flanked by a pair of pierced chi-dragon handles, the body with a chi-dragons cartouche enclosing a scene of scholars engaging in leisurely pursuits, composing poems, evaluating paintings and enjoying the scenery while their attendants carry books and water-filled buckets for tea preparation amidst a terraced lush garden, the other side featuring a group of men with different preoccupations, two awaiting entry at a door, another listening to his subordinate attentively while others tame their horses in a county yard, all reserved on a fine graviata ruby ground enriched with scrolling flowering lotus in between a band of ruyi under the trumpet rim and further bands of ruyi lappets and archaistic dragon scrolls encircling the lower section, the interior glazed turquoise.

  • The present lot is remarkable for its sumptuous decoration that successfully fuses a combination of motifs over a large area. The meticulous preparation that was invested into the overall composition is evident, as the laborious sgraffiato technique employed on the ruby ground on a vessel of this massive size is rare. A vase of almost identical size and form, but with different subject matter was sold at Christie's New York, 16-17 September 2010, lot 1420.
