An extremely rare gilt-bronze and cloisonné-enamelled document chest
Qianlong
Sturdily cast in a cubic-shaped box, each side lavishly painted with a landscape scene, the front and back featuring a similar scene of interconnected riverside villages amongst a mountainous landscape with lush pine trees, one side with a seascape of a junk and smaller fishing sampan passing by a fort at the riverbank, the reverse with two large naval ships and additional sampan mooring at the docks, the cover depicting a serene scene of paddy fields with deers and cranes, fastened onto the main body with two hinges and a locking mechanism, all framed at the edges with gilt keyfret scrolls and surmounted on a stand with archaistic scrolls, all brilliantly enamelled in vivid tones of black, blue, green, yellow, red, lavender and white on a turquoise ground.
