Footnotes

  • The current lot epitomises the ability of the Jingdezhen potters in imitating a variety of materials through the utilisation of different enamel colours. More specifically, a wide selection of enamel colours and glazes was formulated in the Imperial workshops during the Qianlong reign, thereby paving the way for the advancement of porcelain simulations of different forms of media. Interestingly, the merits of these works lie not only in their verisimilitude, but the fact that the technique was not restricted only to the more precious materials, but also normal household items similar to the current lot.

A closely related famille rose porcelain insect cage, with similar decoration and shape, also bearing the seal mark Leshan Tang, from the Qing Court collection, is preserved in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Ye Peilan (ed.), The Complete Collection of the Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelains with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, Hong Kong, 2009, p.166, no.147. For another similar famille rose enamelled box and cover, also bearing a Leshantang mark, see Christie's Hong Kong, 30 May 2006, lot 1235.
