A pair of brilliantly enamelled doucai 'floral spray' bowls
Qianlong six-character seal marks and of the period
Each delicately potted with a prominent recessed foot rising up to steep rounded sides and slightly lipped rim, the interior enamelled with a roundel of aster and leafy sprigs, the exterior with a central medallion of blossoming floral spray, encircled by a band of floral border with an outer floral scrolls comprised of free-flowing lines, the exterior with an elaborate and dense floral spray interspersed by interlocking chains of C-scroll vines, below a band of trefoils around the rim, all brilliantly enamelled in vivid tones of red, blue, yellow, green and aubergine, the base with a six-character zhuanshu seal mark in underglaze-blue.

    The decorative motifs of the current lot were developed from prototypes which emerged from the Yongzheng period. See a doucai garlic-mouth vase and a doucai meiping with similar decoration in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours. The Complete Collection of the Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 1999, pp.244-245, nos. 224 & 225.

    A comparable pair of bowls from the Edward T. Chow collection was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 25 November 1980, lot 128; and another, 9 October 2012, lot 3100.
