Introduced during the second year of Rolls Royce Silver Cloud production, the handsome Sport Saloon by James Young Ltd. saw a total run of just 24 vehicles. Such exclusivity was perhaps predictable right from announcement, as the $19,600 list price for the coachbuilt car represented a 50 percent premium over the contemporary works-built Silver Cloud saloon.
The James Young Silver Cloud entices the appreciative viewer with its handcrafted aluminum body and custom-appointed interior. The design features highly unusual nods to 1950s American car design, including the hardtop-type window openings, and even more remarkably, the modest tail fins atop the rear fendersall executed with restraint befitting a Rolls Royce.
The silky-smooth Silver Cloud 4.9-liter inline-six engine shared its newly enlarged displacement, new aluminum cylinder head and twin SU carburetors with the Bentley R Type that was its contemporary. Rolls Royce built the automatic transmission, a 4-speed GM Hydra-Matic, under license.
Delivered new in April 1956, this lovely Sports Saloon by coachbuilder James Young of Bromley, was originally owned by one Hubert Daniel, of the UK, hence the right-hand drive configuration. The second owner was a San Diego Rolls Royce Club member of long standing. From him, it passed to another Californian, who meticulously conserved it for five years while occasionally putting it into service for weddings.
In 2009, the vendor, a British car specialist, became the car's fourth owner, and soon after set about bringing its paint, chrome work and glass up to Concours standards. The engine and transmission were removed for restoration and renewal as needed, and even underbody was well detailed. This James Young Sports Saloon has since garnered an impressive collection of Concours awards, including Best in Show, Best in Class and First Place honors at various California events.
The powertrain was gone over by the vendor during the car's reconditioning, with an eye towards reliability. The car has been driven approximately 4,500 miles since and at the time of cataloging the odometer readingstated by the vendor to be original mileagewas 66,481.
A complete Rolls Royce tool kit, workshop manuals and owner handbook are included. Also to accompany the car is an uninstalled air conditioning system of the type introduced as a Silver Cloud "export market" option in mid-1956.
