As readily recognizable as the immortal 'Beetle' itself, the Volkswagen Type 2 and its derivatives enjoyed an even longer period in production than their saloon progenitor. The original was conceived in the late 1940s by a Dutch Volkswagen agent, Ben Pon, who drew up plans for a van based on the Beetle floorpan and running gear. The result of Pon's efforts arrived in 1950 and almost immediately proliferated into a bewildering variety of models catering for an enormous range of commercial and domestic activities. Mechanically the Type 2 mirrored the Beetle, with a 1500cc motor introduced for the 1963 model year in the US market, giving 51bhp.

Certainly the most iconic – not to mention collectible – variants are the DeLuxe Microbus models featuring the skylight windows and Golde sunroof, which became design hallmarks of the model. The earliest versions, nicknamed 'Samba' in Europe, featured no less than 23 windows in total. In 1964 the rear corner windows were deleted and the resulting 21-window remained in production until 1967. The window count consists of the split-screen windshield, two front door windows, four side windows each side, a single window in the rear hatch and eight skylights in the roof. In DeLuxe form the 21-window benefited from additional chrome strips on the beltline, a dash clock and other changes.

Nicely presented in two-tone white and green period colors, this 1966 Volkswagen 21-Window Microbus is a local Pebble Beach car and has been regularly exercised by its enthusiast owner on the Peninsula. Built in January 1966, we are advised by the vendor that this Microbus underwent a ground up restoration in 1999 in Los Angeles, shortly after which it came into their possession. The Microbus has undergone continual improvement in the current custodianship and is a well known sight driving around Pebble Beach and Carmel. Stylishly finished in the period colors of white and green, with matching white vinyl upholstery and tan carpeting, the Volkswagen has been nicely restored to factory original specification, and as a nine-seater is the perfect classic people mover.
