Footnotes

  • Provenance: an American private collection

Acclaimed Singaporean-Chinese artist Cheong Soo Pieng (Zhong Sibin, 1917-1983) experimented with the use of 'found objects' in his paintings, at times extending his canvases into three-dimensional works. A metal relief work dated to 1970 entitled 'Imagination' is in the collection of the National Art Gallery, Singapore, and was highlighted in the retrospective exhibition Cheong Soo Pieng: Bridging Worlds held at the Singapore Art Museum from September 15 to December 26, 2010.

In this current work 'Lady and Bird', Cheong utilised various metals and other 'found materials' to fashion one of his most beloved motifs of a Balinese lady. Copper plates, shavings, hammered metals, wire mesh, and painted paper were all combined to form this rare sculptural relief. It showcases the artist's command of sculptural media, as well as his creativity in expanding the traditional parameters of painting.
