  吳冠中於1974年，即55歲開始從事水墨畫創作，90年代最主要的特徵就是形式走向抽象，從而表現他的意象世界。此作結合了畫家最具代表性的形式語言：流動的線條、立體的塊面和明快單純的色點，構成了水光瀲灧，倒影如幻，輕舟似梭的畫面。水墨的疏密、力度、韻律和節奏如音符般，演奏著點、線、面交響曲。吳冠中曾說：「一切藝術都崇尚音樂」，而〈船〉像極了一首輕鬆愉悅的歌曲。
