Nephrite of pebble material; very well hollowed, with a recessed, slightly concave foot; carved on one side with a rocky landscape with a mature pine, a bamboo and a lingzhi and, on the other, with a similarly rocky scene through which a stream runs, with a flowering prunus tree, an orchid and another lingzhi beneath a formalized cloud formation, the rocks extending onto both narrow sides where small tufts of foliage and a third lingzhi grow, the foot incised in seal script zhenwan ('[For] precious enjoyment')

    1750–1880
    Height: 7.05 cm
    Mouth/lip: 0.80/2.35 and 2.30 cm (oval)

The style of carving here is fascinating and wholly eccentric. It is difficult to relate it directly to any particular school, although certain features such as the carving of the rock, stream, and wispy cloud formation suggest a possible influence of the Master of the Rocks school. However, the manner in which the carving is executed, particularly in the pine tree, is entirely eccentric and relates to the most sophisticated of Chinese painting style, where re-acquired naïveté was the highest achievement of the artist in all the languages of visual art.

The inscription on the base is equally eccentric in conception and conceived as a seal, where the seal script has been arranged in the available space in a manner that transcends the message and may be read as an independent work of art.
