Footnotes

  • Provenance:
The collector's notes indicate: "According to the documents that came with the pipe bag, a Mrs. Florence Lockwood, who either lived on the Sioux Reservation or visited there, purchased the bag from the chief of the Sioux tribe. The chief of the tribe assured her that the bag had been the property of the late chief, Sitting Bull. She gave the bag to a John R. Wilson in 1927, who was active in the fraternal organization Improved Order of Red Men, the bag subsequently becoming part of the Des Moines, Iowa chapter's lodge memorabilia."
