British Salmonidae], 12 hand-coloured engraved plates by Lizars after Jardine (repairs to upper margin of 7, a few short tears repaired not touching image, some side-margins shaved), each with accompanying leaf of letterpress text, 3 engraved vignettes (one hand-coloured), one woodcut vignette, without the title, modern quarter morocco, original cloth gilt lettering label on upper cover, preserved in cloth solander box with gilt morocco lettering label [Nissen ZBI 2092], large folio, [Edinburgh, W.H. Lizars, 1839-1841]

  • VERY SCARCE WORK ILLUSTRATED WITH FINE COLOUR PLATES, the page size 650 x 490mm. The plates comprise four of the Salmon (Salmo salar) at various stages of its development; four of the Sea-trout (S. trutta); two of the Brown trout (S. fario); one of the Ferox (S. ferox); one of the Vendace (Coregonius vandesius).

    William Jardine (1800-1874), best known for his Naturalist's Library, was an avid angler, fishing the Tweed between 1832 and 1835. His determination "to solve the history of the life cycles of trout and salmon led to his collection of specimens from many English lakes and Scottish lochs, especially on a tour of Sutherland... in 1834". He was later appointed to the Royal Commission on the Salmon Fisheries of England and Wales.
