Footnotes

  • In 1998 Riley participated in the White Noise exhibition at Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland with a site specific wall drawing, Composition with Circles 1. For the installation, she employed the basic unit of a circle repeated in different ways over the wall surface. In this web of nearly touching or overlapping identical hoops, 'there's something simultaneously constant and yet varied'. And it is 'this sort of inconstancy within stasis' that generates multi-focal visual impulses and activates the space rhythmically, as the eye moves across the wall. In 2000, she revisited the asystematic repetition of black circular outlines in response to a second public commission for Reconnaisance at Dia Center for the Arts, New York. Composition with Circles 2, 2001 was produced to accompany the exhibition and is the largest print Riley has made to date.
