PROVENANCE: Painted in 1989 Warlayirti Artists, Wirrimanu (Balgo Hills), Western Australia Deutscher Brunswick Street, Fitzroy Property of a Melbourne Collector
Along with Sunfly Tjampitjin, Wimmitji Tjapangarti, Jimmy Njamme Tjampitjin and his wife Suzie Bootja Bootja Napangarti, Kukatja artist Mick Gill Tjakamarra was one the pioneers of the painting movement at Balgo Hills (Wirrimanu). It was Tjakamarra who travelled with his son Matthew to represent the Wirrimanu Artists at their first group exhibition, Art of the Great Sandy Desert, at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in late 1986.
Michael Rae's arrival as art advisor at Balgo (1989-1992) saw the introduction of a broad range of colours for the use of the artists, instigating a period of some of the most exciting, innovative and radiant paintings from this region. Although Tjakamarra has chosen a more traditional palette of earth colours in this example, it still remains vibrantly charged with energy, generated by the swirling thick black lines interspersed with red, yellow and white pigment which connect each of the water holes and capture the power of the Rainbow Snake. Artists at this time generally painted canvases which were no larger than 120 by 90cm. However, on a handful of rare occasions artists were entrusted with a larger canvas 180 by 120cm, such as this major early example.
This painting was exhibited at one the first exhibitions of Balgo paintings in Melbourne and took place at one of the most prestigious contemporary art galleries of the time, Deutscher Brunswick in Fitzroy.
