PROVENANCE: Painted in 1995 Karen Brown Gallery, Darwin Private collection
These two historic small paintings are amongst the very first artworks produced by the renowned Larrakia painter, singer and dancer, Prince Of Wales (Mudpil). In 1995 art dealer Karen Brown was walking through a market in Darwin when she noticed the artist sitting with some very small paintings, created using ochres on cardboard. Intrigued by these works, she bought the artist eight small canvases and some acrylic paint to see what he would produce, two of which are offered here.
These paintings mark the beginning of a remarkable collaboration between artist and dealer, who represented him from 1995 until his death in 2002. His early 'body mark' works were all on a small scale, and ultimately evolved into large canvases, one of which won the 2001 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in the General Painting category.
