Footnotes

  • See Bennett D. and Mascetti D., 'Understanding Jewellery', Antique Collector's Club, 2006, page 252, plate 405, for an example of similar craftsmanship and design by Federico Fasoli.

By 1860, the popularity Italian archaeological revival jewellery was well- established; then contemporary, beautifully crafted gold jewels and objects were created to replicate ancient Etruscan and Roman ornaments. Coveted and collected by the social and the scholarly elite of Europe, these elaborate and artistic creations were adorned with finely crafted filigree, granulation, and beaded decoration.

The present lot is a fine representation of Italian archaeological revival jewellery, its' design reminiscent of the traditional Etruscan style of adornment in antiquity.
