An unusual French 18th century carved ivory ceremonial mace
In three sections, the top section in the form of a spear with fleur de lis tip a twisted tapering design decorated with lotus and acanthus leaves, the mid section carved in low relief with images of European and African animals such as lions, elephants and dogs fighting with mythical creatures such as dragons and a unicorn, the bottom section with a central profile portrait of Henry IV of France, within a frame inscribed ' HENRY IIII ROY DE FRANCE ET DE NAVARAE' and dated 1598 with his coat of arms on the reverse and with extensive acanthus leaf decoration, 85cm long
