Saleroom notices

  • Please note the description should read: 'indistinctly inscribed and dated Anno Dni 1684/Pinxit in...m.i. 686' Additional provenance: Taylor sale, Cheltenham, 1863 Colin Campbell Baillie T.A.G. Strickland Wilton House Museum; Christie's New York, 13 Jan.1987, lot 28, as 'attributed to Charles Jervas'. Note: The sitter has traditionally been identified as Princess Louisa Maria Theresa (b. 1692) daughter of James II and Mary of Modena. This identification would seem to be contradicted by the date of the present picture which also discounts her four sisters as possible sitters.
