A Japanese Katani Buddha
Late 19th century
The Buddha standing bare-footed, with a kind smile on his face, his large ear lobes touching his shoulders, dressed in long flowing robes decorated with floral scrolls, knotted below his navel to reveal a hairy chest and belly, his left hand holding a large ball, his right hand, a bag thrown over his shoulder.
- Please note the Buddha is called Hotei, and the ware is Satsuma. To the lower left side of the Buddha marked "大日本萨摩烧明雅堂" (Great Nippon Satsuma Yaki, Min Miya Dou).
A very similar Hotei buddha is catalogued in P. 114, Schiffer, N. Nancy, Japanese Export Ceramics 1860 to 1920, Schiffer Publishing Ltd., 2000. The item is 10" high and is priced $4,830.
