Burl wood (generally nanmu or huamu ) furniture and scholar's objects used by the Chinese literati dates to the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), and shows an appreciation for the Daoist ideals of naturalness and spontaneity. The organic patterns are often said to evoke clouds or rippling waters.
