Footnotes

  • Modelled after a pair of candlesticks by Paul Storr, London 1800, commissioned by Vulliamy & Son, for William Beckford (1760-1844) and the Abbey at Fonthill. Paul Storr was no doubt influenced by a group of boxwood candlesticks attributed to the workshops of Nancy.

Beckford refers to this style of stick as "Holbein", Vuillamy & Son describes the commission as 'extremly [sic] high finished in every part and chased almost all over with rich arabesque ornaments', Public Record Office, London c.104/57, suggesting that a Louis XIV silver-gilt example may have been in London in 1800.

The firm of Vulliamy can be traced back to Francois Justin Villiamy, (1712-1797) a Swiss watch-maker who settled in London in the second quarter of 18th century. During their time the firm also enjoyed the patronage of the English Royal family.
