Footnotes

  • The Protea cynaroides, or King Protea, is found in the southwestern and southern parts of South Africa, and has been adopted as South Africa's national flower. The national cricket team are known as "the Proteas", such is the strong affiliation with this large and exotic flower on the national level. In the 1920s, when Moorcroft was introducing new ranges with an every increasing focus on more exotic flowers, he incorporated this striking flower into his range of designs. Believed to have been retailed exclusively in South Africa, examples of this design appear very infrequently at auction with this particular piece being a fine example.

A similar vase can be seen illustrated in Paul Atterbury's 'Moorcroft; 1897-1993 New Edition', Dennis and Edwards, 2008, pg. 124 pl. 1
