STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968.
Typed Manuscript with annotations in various hands, 46 pp, 4to, n.p., [1945], being the original draft of "The Pearl of the World" as published in Woman's Home Companion, pages age-toned, some spotting to early leaves, last few leaves with tears and cello-tape repairs, condition fair but legible, paginated consecutively.
STEINBECK'S TYPESCRIPT OF "THE PEARL OF THE WORLD," THE ORIGINAL SOURCE FOR "THE PEARL." Steinbeck began work on his parable about greed in early 1944, while still writing Cannery Row. He struggled with the story on and off for the next year, conceiving it as both a short story/novella and a film. Peter Howard's notes indicate that this copy of "The Pearl of the World" was that submitted to Woman's Home Companion for publication: the notations present in the margins are consistent with editorial corrections and readerly notes.
