Illustrated with engravings throughout including portrait frontispiece, 5 double-page maps, 3 double-page views, 3 other double-page plates, 3 full-page plates and about 50 full-page engravings within text. 19th century morocco gilt. Portrait cut down and mounted, P4 corner torn with some loss to text, 3C1 margin torn with slight loss to shoulder note, 1 double-page plate with centerfold split and another with marginal loss, small markings on plate in Shakespeare's epitaph, ink trials on final page, few minor repairs, text block entirely detached, binding worn at edges.
FIRST EDITION of the foremost county history of this period. Dugdale spent 20 years conducting first-hand research across Warwickshire, often accompanied by the artist W. Sedgwick. Dugdale records Shakespeare's epitaph and reproduces his monument at Stratford. There is also information on the purchase of a home by the great-great-grandfather of George Washington.
