A composite armour
Late Edo Period, late 18th/19th century
A fifty-two-plate russet-iron suji bachi kabuto with five rows of hoshi running horizontally around the bowl, to the front a russet-iron tosei mabisashi and mounted with a six-stage mixed metal tehen kanamono; the hineno jikoro of iron kiritsuke kozane black-lacquered, the lower plate gilded and having silver fukurin on the fukigaeshi as well as the mabisashi; on the front a gilt-wood shachihoko maedate; a russet-lacquered hanbo, gold-lacquered iron kiritsuke kozane ko-sode laced in bands of takuboku ito, red, mauve and white odoshi; a dangae do black-lacquered with six kusazuri each lined with lacquered leather, the do laced overall in takuboku ito the lower row in red; the front of the do with a detachable cover made from the skin of two black bear paws complete with claws; simple black-lacquered oda gote, ikada haidate and shino suneate; together with a blue and white silk cover for a shikoro (associated), with an armour box and a stand.
