  • 大鍔 鬼面 銘「了榮作」 18世紀

With NBTHK Tokubetsu Kicho certificate, dated Showa 54 (1979).

Ohara Katsunari (fl.circa mid Edo Period) was a Myochin School armour maker. Ryoei was his go (artist name). He was originally from Aki (now Hiroshima prefecture) and later went to Tokyo where he gained a reputation for being adept with the metal repoussé (uchidashi) technique. His works were thought to be suitable for use in battle. Although he uses the name Ryoei, many works conceived to by him are often unsigned. See Haynes, Index, no.H07591, where the present example is cited.
