A gold lacquer and metal-inlaid four-case inro

Bearing a fundame ground, inlaid in shakudo and gold takazogan with a continuous scene of Tekkai sennin seated on a rocky ledge, above a waterfall beneath a pine tree, blowing out his spirit, the landscape of gold takamakie with details of kirikane and the interior of rich nashiji, signed for the lacquer Kakosai and for the metalwork Akimori.

    Iwasaki Akimori, who lived in Edo during the middle of the 19th century, was a student of Haruaki Hogen and was chiefly known as a maker of sword fittings and kagamibuta plates.

    The design is taken from an album entitled Ehon Tsuhoshi, by Tachibana Morikuni (1679-1748), published in 1729, illustrated together with the inro by Else Kress, Meeting Once More, Leiden, 1998, p.71, figs. 96/97.
