Footnotes

  • This striking scene is not known to connect to any previous depictions of the zenana at the royal court of Udaipur. However, it would seem to follow the extraordinary invention that the atelier of Tara and Sivalal were exploring at time when there position in the court was rapidly diminishing under pressure from photography.

    Provenance:
Mrs. Le Roy Davidson Collection, Los Angeles
Acquired from Sotheby's, New York, March 25, 1987, lot 136.
