A maiden playing with a yo-yo
Rajasthan, circa 1800
Opaque watercolor on paper; framed within a cusped niche worked with incomplete foliate designs, the maiden dangles a yo-yo with air of detachment. She wears a long orange jama and strings of pearls. Her face is drawn with a curving red-tinged eye, high forehead and faintly stippled hair.

  • The attribution of this painting is unclear as the facial features are aligned with Rajasthan, yet the body type is more closely associated with the Punjab Hills. Compare with another Lady playing with a yo-yo, attributed to Bundi or Kota, ca. 1770 in the Brooklyn Museum of Art (80.268.1)
