A double-sided Vishnu series
Andhra Pradesh, late 18th century
Opaque watercolor on cloth; One side painted with heroes from the Ramayana with Hanuman and member of the monkey army. Each is powerfully modeled with wide eyes, lavish gold adornments as they stand beneath three large lotus-like blossoms and delicate leafy vines suspended from an archway. The other side depicts a nobleman in a candy-striped jama with hands raised in devotion.
