A firman of Dara Shikoh

Ink on paper; this firman (royal mandate or decree issued by a sovereign) was issued by Dara Shikoh (r. 1616-1659) is complete is all its essential formalities. It begins with a dedication line, the bismillah: there is no God, but God... Below the dedication line in red comes the tughra which gives the names and titles of Dara Shikoh in ornamental nasta'liq script. The great seal abive reads The powerful, heroic padshah, the son of Shah Jahan, Muhammad Dara Shikoh, 17th year (of the reign of Shah Jahan), 1054 (A.H./A.D. 1644-45).
