A thangka of Rahula, Pindola Bharadvaja, and Chudapantaka
Tibet, 18th century
Ground mineral pigments on cloth; in the center is Rahula, the son of Shakyamuni Buddha, holding a golden crown. Above and to the left is the Buddha of Long-life, Amitayus. At the lower left is Chudapantaka with his hands in his lap. At the right is Pindola Bharadvaja holding a book in his right hand and a begging bowl in his left. The Tibetan names are inscribed below or to the side of each of the three arhat figures.
23 x 16 1/2 in. (58.4 x 41.9 cm.); with silks 60 x 36 in. (152.4 x 91.4 cm.)

Footnotes

  • The format of this thangka is almost identical to another in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, see www.himalayanart.org (69405). Both sets are suggested to have been inspired by a set of seven block prints depicting Shakyamuni Buddha & the Sixteen Arhats in the collection of Tibet House, New Delhi. It is suggested that these paintings are based on the famous Narthang Monastery set of prints from the 18th century.

Compare with the facial types, textiles, and landscape elements with an example in the Rubin Museum of Art, see Thurman and Rhie, Wisdom and Compassion 1999, New York, no. 131, p. 362.
