These deer would have been flanking a cakra or wheel of law and set upon the entry gate or roof of a monastery, signifying the first teaching that the Buddha gave.
Compare with a pair of prone deer of similar proportions in Thurman and Weldon, Sacred Symbols, 1999, no. 1 and a standing pair formerly in the Doris Duke Collection, see Christie's, New York, 2004, lot 938.
