A portrait of a lama, perhaps Phagmo Drupa (1010-1070)
Tibet, 12th century
Brass, inlaid with copper and silver; the squat lama with his hands in bhumisparsa and dhyana mudras, his thick patch-work robes inlaid at the seams with silver and a enveloping mediation cloak heavily pleated at the back. His large ovoid head rendered with a happy expression of squinting eyes and wide smiling mouth. His portrait is complete with a receding hair line and large flared ears.
