A copper alloy figure of Yoga-Narasimha
Kerala or Kanataka, 15th/16th century
Finely cast and powerfully modeled showing the lion-headed avatar of Vishnu in the meditation pose of utkutikasana. His lower arms are outstretched and rest on his knees, with the upper arms raised holding a thunderbolt, conch, and a yaagopatta forming an arch over his head. His head is highly stylized with a gaping mouth, bulging eyes and stylized brows below a tapering foliate crown.

Footnotes

  • Narasimha is best known as the avatar who appeared on earth to slay the evil ruler Hiranyakashipu. Narasimha is worshipped as as a symbol of valor and martial strength that he used to vanquich the evil King. Here is he is assuming a victorious pose of a meditative yogi, Yoga-Narasimha is incredulous as protector for all and peace in the world.
