A granite figure of Bhairava
Tamil Nadu, circa 12th century
Finely carved, the terrifying form of Shiva stands in a hieratic pose of samabhanga. His upper hands hold a drum and a noose, while the lost lower hands would have held a trident and and skull bowl. Adorned with various simple jewelry, he is naked and his hair is arranged in a flaming triangular halo. His face appears serene and his aspect is indicated only by small projecting fangs. A dog with a curling tail is pushing against the back of his legs, the god's constant companion.
29 3/4 in. (75.5 cm.) high
