South India 13th/14th century
The pot-bellied elephant-headed son of Shiva sits in rajalilasana on a oval platform. His upper hands hold the axe and noose, while his lower hands hold the tusk-end and a single sweet ball. His well-modeled face is defined by swollen eyes and wrinkled brow above his long curving trunk reaching for the sweet. He is adorned with beaded necklaces, meditation cord and belly strap and wears a conical crown with beaded swags along the forehead.
