A granite figure of Surya,
Tamil Nadu, 12th/13th century
Finely carved, the lithe sun god stands in a hieratic pose of tadasana, both hands holding lotus stems from bent elbows. He wears a short dhoti secured by a pendant belt and further adorned with various jewelry. His serene face is set with almond-shaped eyes and full pursed lips and crowned by a tall chignon and tresses across his shoulders, framed by an oval nimbus.

Footnotes

  • The god Surya, popular deity throughout India and his image is common in most Hindu temples, North and South. As the personification of the sun he is the source of both light and heavenly fire. Surya is said to represent death as well as life and to be the intermediary between darkness and light.
