Footnotes

  • Although the base is a purely Pala period Eastern Indian convention, the Buddha figure is stylistically more commonly associated with Burma. For a full discussion on the 'short neck Buddha type see Casey Singer, Tibetan Homage to Boddh Gaya, in Orientations, Vol. 32. no. 10, December 2001, pp. 44-51.

Compare with a Buddha in Minnanthu at Tayokpye Temple, see Huntington Archive no. 51778. Also compare the rendering of the figures with a miniature stele of the Eight Miraculous Events of Buddha'a Life in the Norton Simon Museum fo Art, see Pal, Art from Sri Lanka & Southeast Asia, 2004, no. 180, p. 229.
