A gray schist relief panel of bodhisattvas
Gandhara, 2nd./3rd century
The two nimbated bodhisattvas wear a three-strand turban around rosette-ornamented crests. Each stand in frontal pose with right hands raised in a gesture of reassurance and the left resting on the hip supporting thickly pleated sanghati ends.
10 x 5 1/4 in. (25.4 x 13.3 cm.)

Footnotes

  • The presence of a rosette in a bodhisattvas turban crest is unusual compared with the more common fantail and stupa found on images of Maitreya. However, the treatment of the turban is matched to an example in the British Museum, see Zwalf, Sculpture of Gandhara, 1996, no. 81.

    Provenance:
Acquired in 1967 by Vlado Sestan, Ambassador of Yugoslavia to Pakistan.
Thence by descent, Private Collection, Canada.
