Footnotes

  • We are informed that his painting is signed, either on the reverse or on the canvas overlap, but this was covered when the canvas was lined.

Lee Robbins was an American portraitist who trained in Paris as a pupil of Carolus Duran, as John Singer Sargent had a few years previously. She exhibited paintings in the Paris Salon.

Auction Notices

  • This painting was exhibited in the Salon, Paris, 1890 with the title 'Sur la Selette On the stool', and was illustrated in the catalogue for th Salon exhibition. The illustration suggests that the painting has been trimmed along the lower edge by about 15-25cm. Information from the vendor's family suggests that the lower edge of the painting had been folded over at some stage in its history. We are grateful to Holly Williamson, post graduate student at Bristol University, for this information.
